IAF Scottish Chapter Celebrates First Birthday

By Martin Pearson, 15-Mar-2013

The IAF Scottish Chapter celebrated its first birthday on 11th March!

The Chapter was established at the beginning of 2012 by staff from Kinharvie Institute and Louise Robb from Louise Robb Associates. The Chapter aims to provide a regular opportunity for facilitators and those using a facilitative approach to meet, support each other and share resources as well as to promote and develop professional group facilitation in Scotland.

The Chapter meetings run for a half-day every quarter and have three main components. Firstly, a member or an invited guest will introduce a topic linked to facilitation. Following a half hour break which gives a chance for people to network informally, there is time for members to share facilitation challenges they are facing and to support each other to develop creative solutions.

In its first year, the Chapter has attracted members from a variety of sectors: social care, health, arts, central government, aviation and consultants.

At the Chapter's first birthday, Michelle Drumm, Media Manager for the Institute for Research and Innovation in Social Science (IRISS) introduced members to a variety of social media platforms and  supported them to explore how they could best use social media to support their work. In the past, other sessions have included a focus on how to facilitate more creatively, how to use the outdoors in your meetings, developing card games for particular facilitation processes and a reflective session using a model to support members to identify how they could improve their practice.
